In order to increase adventure tourism vis-a-vis employment opportunities in Uttarakhand kayak and rafting sports other than Ganga will be gradually allowed depending upon feasibility.

Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj informed that from this year devotees and tourists visiting Gangotri will be able to enjoy river rafting and kayaking from Harshil in Bhagirathi river till 15 kilometers downstream. “Besides Bhagirathi other rivers in the state will also be opened for rafting and kayaking after the technical committee`s feasibility reports,” the State Tourism Minister said.

According to the minister there are immense possibilities of river rafting and water sports in other rivers of Uttarakhand. “Water sports lovers from all over the world want to do river rafting and white water kayaking in the rivers of Uttarakhand,” he said.

Uttarakhand Tourism Development Council found a distance of 15 km suitable for river rafting/kayaking activities in Bhagirathi river starting from world famous tourist spot Harshil.

Apart from Ganga, the council wants to promote Bhagirathi as world class river rafting destination and roped in a river rafting company to start rafting and kayaking activities.
