Dehradun: An integrated farming and rural development initiative led by IIT Roorkee is improving livelihoods, education and women’s empowerment in Khunt village of Almora district. The project is being implemented under the Rootage Smart Village Center (RSVC), in collaboration with SETU Aayog, Nehir Himalayan Foundation and AARTI Foundation.

A key outcome is the plantation of over one lakh mulberry saplings, largely led by local women, supporting sericulture, integrated farming and soil conservation. Traditional livelihoods have also received a boost through an upgraded wool charkha, while a community library is strengthening education at the village level.

Speaking at the “Harit Khulgad Nari Shakti Utsav 2026”, IIT Roorkee Director Prof. K.K. Pant said education and technology together are creating a strong foundation for sustainable development in rural and hill areas. The initiative reflects the vision of inclusive and self-reliant growth under Vision 2047.
