The US decision to impose tariffs on Indian products could hit Uttarakhand`s pharma industry hard. The state exports ₹200 crore worth of medicines to the US annually, but the increased tariffs could make this trade more expensive and less competitive.

Uttarakhand has 300 major pharma units, with 165 exporting medicines. According to the Drug Manufacturing Association, Uttarakhand contributes 20% to India`s total drug production. Experts believe that higher US tariffs will increase production costs, affecting exports and potentially raising drug prices.

India currently imposes a 10% import duty on US pharmaceuticals, while the US has not imposed any tariffs on Indian medicines so far. However, the US President has announced retaliatory tariffs starting April 2.

Industry experts suggest that Uttarakhand`s pharma companies should focus on expanding exports to other markets. However, the actual impact will only be clear once the tariffs come into effect.
